4:35 pm - 4:55 pm Taking the Higher Ground in Category Management
Doug Van Wingerden - Senior Vice President, Insight Sourcing Group
The challenge of savings sustainment has been around for years, yet very little progress has been made.  Companies have made some investments towards category management but research shows that these solutions still are not sustainable.  Why is that? It's because procurement teams still haven't found a way to consistently demonstrate value.  The good news is that the biggest barriers to category management excellence -- securing access to “perfect” category data, the ability to manage and analyze large volumes of data, and developing the category expertise necessary to formulate insights and actions —are finally coming down.  Procurement teams armed with the with the proper roadmap and the will to execute can break through these barriers in a rapid and cost effective manner.

In this session, we will explore:
•Real proof points on the value of Category Management
•How the barriers of data and data analytics are coming down
•What to do next

Mark Richardson - Head of Procurement, Fleet and Administrative Services, AAA-California
As important as savings are, it’s not enough anymore to just be on the cost side of the equation – to make a real difference to leadership, you need to make an impact on the commercial side as well. This enlightening presentation will talk you through how leading practitioners showcased leadership and delivered value in unexpected ways. Key components include:

• What are the proven strategies to make the most of your supplier relationships and add to the top-line growth of your organization?
• Approaches to convince your senior management to support more revenue-generating activities in procurement
• How can procurement engage marketing/commercial/stakeholders and deliver revenue-generating initiatives

Long a standard of procurement methodologies, the typical RFP ends up being seen as too general, results in a "check the box" approach from vendors interested in winning the business. Companies often tend to cast a wide net so as not to miss out on an opportunity, but in the end, you're left with canned responses and the natural conclusion is just to select lowest price tag, not necessarily the best value. This session will help you decide if you:

• Can you still have real success with the traditional RFP, or are there alternative methods that will get even better results?
• Techniques to help make the procurement process more agile
• Are there specific category-specific approaches that work?

Let’s face it - the old days of standard sourcing engagements are over. Given procurement's perfect position to shield their company from third party risks, the time has come for careful risk assessment in each and every engagement - but how do get your stakeholders and customers to understand the safest way is not always the fastest way? As risk management becomes a more imperative part of the procurement life cycle, how can you prepare your stakeholders and suppliers from a change management perspective? And what impact does the new the risk requirements imposed by both the regulatory and internal risk organizations have on the efficiency and effectiveness of a supply chain? In recent years, its become increasingly clear that an enterprise will only achieve operational excellence within both its procurement and finance operations if the CPO and CFO have a true inter-departmental partnership and achieve alignment on cash management, savings, and P2P performance. The collaboration between procurement and finance is crucial - when the relationship between these two critical departments is strained, lacking in trust, and characterized by “transactional” alliances (versus strategic ones), organizations miss out on significant value and benefits. This executive discussion will cover how can you strengthen your organization and build the CFO bond.
